Gathering '99 - Photos
The '99 Gathering was held at the Mazama Lodge that is run by the Portland mountain climbing group the Mazama's. Located on the south side of Mt. Hood just a few miles from the Pacific Crest Trail, this site proved to be a perfect meeting location. With a little luck, we'll be back in 2000. |
Roger Carpenter, ALDHA-West's past Secretary / Treasure prepares his computer, as he awaits the throng of expected attendees. This year meeting was attended by some ninety one individuals, traveling from as far away as Alaska and Europe. |
Members queue up for some of the best cooking in the West. Our two chef's provided a wide range of delicious vegetarian cuisine. Even the most ravenous meat eater felt more than satisfied at meals end. We can only hope they'll be around next year. |
'99 proved to be a great year for PCT thru-hikers. The La Nina weather kept the Sierra snows at reasonable depths. Of the seventy or so people that thru-hiked the PCT this year, nineteen stopped off at The Gathering. This short break gave them some time to unwind before heading home and back to the "Normal" world. |
O.d. Coyote leads a discussion on preserving trail memories. Known for his leisurely eight month hike of the AT in '80. O.d. took advantage of his short hiking days to think deeply about and photograph the world around him. |
Members take advantage of the fantastic Fall weather to meet outside and discuss the pit falls of returning to "Civilization" after a five month journey into the Wilderness. |
Garrett Holmes (foreground) and Bill Gurwell discuss the fine art of homemade gear. Proving to all that given the right motivation that "Yes Virginia, men can sew!" They showed off numerous packs, articles of clothes, tarps and sleeping bags. All designed to take a load off your back and wallet, while still keeping you comfortable in the wild. |
Newly elected ALDHA-West President Marshall Karon (in yellow shirt) shows off his light step in a late night square dance. Clearly no professional dancer's career was in jeopardy as this intrepid group of troubadours with more energy than reason, danced the night away. A good time was had by all! |
Past ALDHA-West President, Bob Turner (right) and Ben Nencini talk about what they've been doing since last years Gathering. The Gathering provides an excellent opportunity for old hiking partners to get together to talk about the love of hiking. Many beginning hikers attend to soak up the wisdom of the masters. |
